How Often Should You Clean Your Fridge and Freezer?
So, confession time.
I’m not the best at cleaning my fridge and freezer, in fact, it happens only when the fridge starts getting a bit stinky!
I’m trying to keep on top of house maintenance and now with juggling work part-time Alhamdulillah (All praise to God), blogging and family life, I have even less time to stay on top of things.
One thing that has worked for me has been scheduling things on my Google Calendar.
So, if I cleaned the fridge and Freezer this month, I put in a date for 3 months time to clean it out again.
NOW HEAR ME OUT PEOPLE!
There’s only 2 of us, we shop regularly and if there is a spillage, it gets cleaned up there and then.
I know exactly what’s in my fridge and freezer thanks to the Sortly app as I have a running inventory of what’s available and not when we go shopping.
That doesn’t mean we sometimes forget and don’t use the app and overbuy something we already have, but we have gotten better!
I do a full on deep clean every 3 months simply because I like to let the stock run really low, use up what we have and then buy some more stuff which usually comes up to 3 months.
Once a month may work for you if you have a busy family and use the fridge and freezer a lot or even once a week, but for me every 3 months is fine.
We all know how to clean a fridge right?
I mean I do, but do you?!
Take everything out, wash the shelves with hot, soapy water and then clean the inside of the empty fridge with your favourite cleaner.
This not only sanitises your fridge, it makes sure that weird nasty smell is gone.
And if it persists after your cleaning session, put some baking soda in a bowl and the smell will be gone!
Now ideally, you should be able to take everything out and shut down the freezer at the mains.
This is not possible for my indoor freezer but Alhamdulillah we have an outdoor one too (I know, I’m so Desi with an outdoor freezer!)
So, with the outdoor one, we turn it off at the mains and because the shelves freeze over.
Rather than hacking away with a knife at the ice frozen shelves, we boil some hot water in a couple of bowls and leave it on the shelves and close the door.
I then go in with my cleaner and spray the inside, wipe it all down and tah dah!
Beware if you have this kind of freezer indoors, have a tray ready at the bottom of the freezer to catch the water.
We have one at the parents’ house and every time I cleaned it out, it would create a big mess on the carpet!
So, there you have it, my top tips to clean your fridge and freezer.
